Terrestrial Snails

 Philomycus carolinianus (Bosc, 1802)

Carolina Mantleslug

This is one of the largest gastropods in Iowa.  It can be as long as four inches, although it is usually closer to three.

This slug is widespread throughout the eastern United States, according to Hubricht.  He shows it in several counties in the eastern part of Iowa.

I have seen this species in Mahaska and Webster Counties in Iowa and it is probably widespread throughout the state.

This slug can be found in fallen trees that are in fairly moist woodlands.
