Terrestrial Snails

 Mesodon clausus

Yellow globelet

This species has also been called Helix clausa and Polygyra clausa.  It is widespread across the eastern United States and has been recorded in most counties that have records for Iowa.

I found this individual in Springbrook State Park in Guthrie County, Iowa.  It was found in the leaf litter in a relatively soggy area.

This species has a relatively high spire and a rounded aperture.

The form we have in Iowa is Mesodon clausus clausus.  Another subspecies, Mesodon clausus trossulus is found only in Alabama.

This snail has an umbilicus which is partly covered by the reflected lip.
